Total indulgence...

After travelling in China, which I enjoyed immensely I headed back to Hong Kong and decided that I would stay there for a few weeks rather than travel to Taiwan. I just couldn't be bothered to be honest to go to another country dragging my luggage around and having the same converstaions with strangers that at times can drive you to despair. I don't want to sound ungracious but there's a limit to the anount of times you can be asked what your favourite food/colour/place/music is and also where have you been?/are you going?/and isn't it wonderful being a social worker. Not for the first time on this trip, Basil Fawlty would have had a field day! So I returned to HK, read a lot of books, watched movies, spent time with friends, saw the sites and ate a considerable amount of cheese. Partly in preperation for the expected lack of that in Cambodia but also because I discovered in an Italian Delicatessen selling something called 'duetto'. what in actual fact they were selling was heaven in the form of a cheese...a sumptuous blend of Gorgonzola and Marscapone. Oh my god, I ate so much of it and numerous other delights that I must have added several pounds to my already not inconsiderable bulk. When I die, I want to be buried in Gorgonzola with ahalf a dozen bottles of red wine at my side...you never know.

I have to admit that the longer I stayed in HK, the more I liked it. Just hanging around doing 'normal' things with lovely people perhaps reminded me that as a Taurean, I long to settle and be confortable. In HK at least the balance between adventure and wanting to settle awas perhaps as close as its been for many years. Still, Cambodia is just a couple of hours away, so I'll always have that choice if i need some familair company, red wine and duetto. (Try it if you can find it, you will not be disappointed).

Hong Kong is a great place to shop or just wander through the streets looking at antiques, drink coffee and people watch and the cheap ferries can soon get you out of the smog to more peaceful surroundings. Never thought I'd say it but I discovered that I love the place...why did it take me so long?

So, I left HK with a heavy heart and eturned to Ko Pha Ngan to hook up with old friends from home and to spend the festive season avoiding the festive season, Bah! Humbug! and all that.
